Audio Network and Screen East today announced the completion of a unique fourteen-month project to record authentic national and ethnic music for use in film, television and multi-media productions.

Audio Network’s Commercial Director, Robert Hurst said “Producers of film and television programmes are increasingly looking for authentic yet media friendly sounds from around the world for use in their productions and we are, therefore, delighted to have the opportunity of promoting the new recordings as an integral part of our music library”

The National & Ethnic music recordings can be previewed at the Audio Network web-site at www.audiolicense.net.

The project was supported by an investment award from Screen East under the Regional Investment Fund for England supported by the Film Council.

Laurie Hayward, Chief Executive of Screen East said “The national and ethnic music project was a great opportunity for young musicians to work with Audio Network’s experienced team of writers and producers of film music and involved the services of more than sixty composers and musicians from diverse cultural backgrounds”

Audio Network represent nearly 100 UK based media composers including Evelyn Glennie, Terry Devine-King, Ian Hughes and John Dankworth and an Oscar winning team of Hollywood based sound designers.

Since winning the 2002 Dti beyond bricks new business of the year competition, Audio Network has released no less than 40,000 sound effects and commissioned nearly 5,000 brand new music tracks covering almost every conceivable style and genre of music as well as completing numerous bespoke commissioned music projects.

Igor Dvorkin, composer & world music consultant said “The Audio Network and Screen East national & ethnic music project helped integrate musicians such as myself from diverse ethnic backgrounds into the mainstream English and American film and television industries.”

Editor’s Note:

  • Sample CDs and photos available on request.

  • The Audio Network national & ethnic recordings styles recorded as part of the Screen East project include Scottish, Celtic, Gypsy, Indian, African, Turkish, Greek, Middle Eastern, Russian, Eastern European & World Percussion.

  • The project involved the participation of national and ethnic communities across the East of England.

  • One of the partnerships formed was with the Trinity Community Centre in East Ham, used by a host of different groups to rehearse their indigenous music The recording sessions at the Trinity Centre were undertaken in partnership with BBC London's 'Voices' project and also resulted in the commercial release of a charity CD that is being sold by the Trinity Centre to help raise funds to support the work of one of London’s most active community centers. The ‘Voices’ project was a pioneering initiative aimed at connecting BBC London staff with a London community. East Ham was chosen because of its vibrant and diverse identity. BBC London staff forged partnerships with local groups and helped set up projects enabling positive development. Working together with different communities and individuals in East Ham put us in direct touch with real east enders and enabled us to work with them to tell their personal stories on BBC London radio and television.. The centre was keen to involve its users in a celebratory CD to highlight the range and quality of activity there. Stories from musicians and others involved with the centre gave us an insight into their lives whilst providing some powerful broadcast material. The CD also helped us to leave a lasting legacy with the East Ham community.

  • Mary Picken of BBC London said " BBC London is thrilled that Audio Network embraced this world music project and has produced such a fantastic CD which is reflective of some of East Ham's many diverse communities. We spent an inspiring two days in the Trinity Centre's hall which was transformed into a temporary studio to record the various groups. Their talent astounded all of us "
